Metro Suspends Routes for Thursday Evening Commute

December 18, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Update: Sounder 1514 (departing Seattle at 5:55 pm) and 1515 (departing Tacoma at 4:55) have been cancelled.

morganhillKing County Metro has pulled the plug on many bus routes for this evening’s commute. You can see the full list of routes that are canceled at the previous link. Metro has also announced that no articulated (bendy) buses will be running — so expect packed buses if you’re leaving from downtown.

The adverse weather page now contains more information at a glance, which is a good improvement from this morning’s chaotic page.

The streetcar and Sounder are operating normally. The monorail is shut down (unrelated to the weather). Wonder how Link would do in this sort of weather? Light rail typically operates fine in the moderate snowfall we’re experiencing. Typically, transit agencies run light rail vehicles around-the-clock during periods of snowfall to keep the tracks clear of any major icing. Most light rail vehicles have dispensers to release sand on the tracks if traction becomes an issue.

Who else got to skip work? And am I the only one hoping for another snow day?

Snow-pocalypse now!

Wow, good freaking luck getting to Lake City tonight.

I think I’m living near one of the only routes (66) without any major changes. They’ve been going past my house on 5th NE like clockwork all day.

I saw a no. 16 going by at about 2 mph.

That made me laugh.

No bendy buses running? I saw a couple of them running downtown this evening. The last 311 to Duvall I rode to get home was using a hybrid bus but it was nearly empty with only 5 passengers on it. Does that mean the transit tunnel is effectively closed because they can’t run the hybrids? I saw a 550 running on the street during tunnel hours. They do occasionally run diesel buses in the tunnel.

I made it to work and back without much trouble despite the weather. We didn’t get much work done anyway because we had a party.

METRO (EPIC) FAIL

Any rubber tired vehicle = fail during snow and ice.

It’s gonna be interesting going up to Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad this weekend.

I can see why Metro pulled most articulated buses from the road. I went and bought a sandwich at a neighborhood SUBWAY, and at Ranier and Alaska, I saw not one, but two articulateds jack-knifed. Most buses running on the 7, were 40ft buses, both diesels and trolleys, as well as an articulated or two.

I’ve got to make it from UW to Factoria tomorrow, so hopefully things get a little better by then. All the 271′s had better not be stuck out in Issaquah!

Multimodal Man says:

The 271 is usually a standard coach. There is a tremendous difference between the bendy buses and a standard.

ericn says:

This is true. I’m just worried since the 271′s route is more rural than most, especially around Newport Way. Also, I heard Issaquah really got dumped on yesterday.
