Snow Day Web Surfing

December 19, 2008 at 6:27 am

UPDATE: Most people are probably at work, and the Metro and CT websites seem to have limped through the day, so we’ve stopped updating here.  We may start an afternoon thread if the websites collapse then.

*********

Because the various transit agency websites are likely to collapse under the strain, here’s a snapshot of their plans for the morning:

Tips and guiding principles from rpin.org:

Bus passengers should be aware that travel conditions can change quickly, and this list of disrupted service may be revised at any time due to weather and road conditions. In some locations, where roads are impassable for large buses, Metro will be operating chained shuttles. In order to safely transport as many passengers as possible, Metro is focusing on providing bus service on cleared highways and arterial roads, and to major transit centers and park-and-ride lots. Access in and out of West Seattle continues to be a problem, and there will be very little service to side streets and smaller neighborhoods.

Passengers should be prepared to board buses at major transit centers, flat arterials, or at the top or bottom of hills. Please dress warmly, wear appropriate footwear, and be prepared to wait. The buses that are running are expected to be significantly delayed.

Lots of more specific information (Metro, ST, CT) is after the jump.  Watch here for updates, and consider this your snow day thread.

Get generic adverse weather info for a route by using the URL:

http://transit.metrokc.gov/tops/bus/adverse/aXXX_0.html

where XXX is the three digit route number, with leading zeros if less than three digits.

As of 9 AM:

King County Metro Transit is focusing on core service until weather and road conditions improve, which means bus service will be significantly limited for the afternoon commute.

This table now reflects routes that will be operating. Note the following:
  • No articulated coaches are being operated
  • Some portions of the routes that are running may be missed
  • Where possible, the list includes any reroutes

Routes temporarily suspended:

2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 19, 22, 23, 25, 27, 31, 32, 35, 37, 38, 39, 45, 46, 53, 57, 64, 68, 74, 79, 99, 105, 107, 114, 118, 122, 123, 125, 126, 133, 134, 143, 149, 152, 154, 155, 158, 159, 161, 162, 164, 167, 170, 173, 175, 179, 182, 183, 187, 191, 192, 196, 197, 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206, 207, 208, 210, 211, 213, 216, 217, 219, 220, 222, 225, 229, 233, 236, 237, 242, 243, 244, 247, 249, 250, 256, 257, 260, 261, 265, 266, 268, 272, 277, 303, 304, 306, 308, 316, 330, 355, 373, ST 540, ST 555, ST 556, ST 560, ST 564, all 800 routes, 912, 921, 929, 981, 982, 984, 986, 987, 988, 989, 994, 995.

Metro will follow this service plan until conditions permit a return to more normal service. The table will be updated as necessary.

As of 10:30 pm Thursday night:

Matt the Engineer says:

Bus service is truly awful right now, but some service is being provided. Yesterday I walked to work and it took me 50 minutes. Today I waited for the bus (the #1, the only thing running anywhere near Queen Anne) and it took me 80 minutes.

Radhika Tadinada says:

Has anyone driven buses this morning from Bellevue to Seattle? Specifically ST Rt 550 over the I-90 Bridges? It would be great to know how delayed this bus route is or even more importantly how difficult are the roads to drive on? Has I-90 been cleared of the snow or is it icy and very difficult to drive on?

Thanks!!

seagull says:

I rode the 550 from South Bellevue P&R and it was going fine. There were 2 back-to-back though, one standard and one artic, but with the high frequency just go out and wait and one will come. I rode on the artic and we had no issues across I-90.

Radhika Tadinada says:

Thanks seagull. That helps a lot. :)

Matt the Engineer says:

I have no direct knowledge, but it says “regular route” which is a good sign. But I wouldn’t count on any kind of regular schedule today – wear warm clothes and bring a good book.

Matt the Engineer says:

(oops – ignore my post. thanks [seagull])

Radhika Tadinada says:

I did see the ‘regular route’ against 550, but was still doubtful of the road. I guess it looks fine (Seagull’s comments) Thanks though Matt!!

AJ says:

All bus service to the north half of the Central District, Madison Park and Madrona has been cancelled, except for the Forty-Late.

Chris Stefan says:

Well you could say the Forty-late is operating normally today. ;-)

J. Lebowski says:

I think using the word limped to describe Metro’s service this morning is overly generous. At least they did a pretty good job today of posting updates about which routes were shut down as opposed to yesterday. Ahhh, Seattle… second-tier city with fourth-tier public transit.

Sam says:

J, I’m not sure if your fourth-tier comment was born out of being a rail fetishist, but Seattle, while not a first-tier public transportation city, it’s certainly not a fourth-tier city.
