Senate Ready to Pass Stimulus With Big Transit Cuts

February 6, 2009 at 6:42 pm

The Senate seems to have worked out a deal  on a stimulus bill after cutting about $100 billion in spending from the last version. The Senate cut another $3.4 billion in transit cash, leaving just $5 billion. The House version had $13 billion for transit. At least Patty Murray fought for transportation. The rest of the Senate has been a massive disappointment.

ridiculous.

this is exactly the right time to focus on transit. construction costs will never be lower, public capital never more readily available.

what a depressing missed opportunity.

To be expected when Wyoming and Alaska have as many votes as California and New York. The parties may change sometimes, but the Senate will never be ready to address urban concerns.

Let me see, they give themselves pay increases while our economy is heading downward, they favor big business, and do not listen to us? Hmm, me thinks its time to convict them of robbing the public of our money.

I see they also cut out a letter from the name of the package.

I was having a relatively good evening until I saw this.

damn, damn, damn… damn it. damn them. striatic, so right–huge missed opportunity(ies). missed opp to develop transit systems with lower construction costs; missed opp to steer future development in a way that is more sustainable; missed opp to shift the cultural paradigm and embrace more efficient and environmentally responsible transportation. somehow i knew the house bill was just too good to be true–and initially i had been disappointed by that… damn.

SOS Different day, we’ve been hoodwinked y’all! At least these Political Neanderthals have proved Charles Darwin correct, because they just lowerd the human race about 3 bars. Not a Cro-Magnon amoung them. Here I am, way down South in Dixie, thinking this is a unique problem in Jacksonville and Florida. Now I can see however that the virus which spread like wildfire toward the end of the great depression is alive and well in Washington. La Città nazionale Riveste la Sindrome or “National City Lines Syndrome” is deadly. The only cure is to vote these infected body’s out of office.

This is going to be one hell of a weekend, where’s my Soco and Rebel yell? YEE HAW!

There’s an Obama House Meeting on Sunday, and his org (the DNC) is prompting people to submit questions.

I assume they will treat the entries like verbatim in market research…”cloud tag” the responses so that they roll up into certain themes. “I like ya, but your economic team has scar marks across the frontol lobe” would be my theme…

But sign up, post a question, and attend if you feel strongly about this. Be constructive (unlike my snideness above).

My advise, and maybe you don’t want to listen to a right wing-nut like me, is to focus on job creation, reduced reliance on foreign oil, and rebuilding infrastructure. Lay low on the social engineering (i.e. avoid buzz words like, cultural paradigm, environmentally responsible; hit hard on sustainable and more efficient).

The silver lining is the money for Amtrak, high speed rail, and state rail grants was included.

Some of that transit funding will be back in after the conference.
