The long-awaited, $13.3m revision of the Kirkland Transit Center is due to begin in October.  Sound Transit is hosting an open house tonight from 5 to 7pm to gather the usual public input.

Beyond general beautification, there are going to be pedestrian and bike improvements.

The area should be a mess for about a year.

Kirkland Transit Center has always seemed like more of a street with a couple bus stops on it than a transit center… will this change that?

Doesn’t look like much from the illustration. They’re replacing those ugly box shelters with something nicer, worthy of a downtown transit center.

I attended the open house briefly last night, and the shelters are definitely much larger (total covered area is more than 2x) and designed with an eye towards improving protection from the elements.

It’s already a mess. Groups of kids blocking sidewalks so people have to walk in the street to get around them. Spitting, littering, jaywalking, underage smoking, underage public drinking, smoking in bus shelters. And where are the police? Is one of these brat’s the mayor’s son or something and police have been told hands off?

Matt says:

Already? What, are they going to add more ruffians as part of the plan?
