As we settle into wintry gloom, here is another set of cheery tunes: “70s they have passed us by”, to the tune of “Angels we have heard on high” about how we cannot wait for the new LINK stations to open, and “Here we come a-Walkering”, urbanist facts made pellucid by Jarrett Walker, Donald Shoup, et al., to the tune of “Here we come a-wassailing.”

To the tune of ‘Angels we have heard on high’:

70s they have passed us by
loaded to infinity
by fine folks who need a ride
to the university

U,LI—–,I—–,I—-NK
can’t wait ’til you o—pen;
U,LI——,I—–,I—-NK
we could use you open now.

I am stuck in Pioneer Square
trying to get to Broadway
Sitting on a forty-nine
will take nearly all day

U,LI—–,I—–,I—-NK
can’t wait ’til you o—pen;
U,LI——,I—–,I—-NK
we could use you open now.

To the tune of ‘Here we come a wassailing’

Here we come a-circling
for parking for the e’en
and still we are a-circling
no free spots to be seen

With free parking we all lose
much time and carbon use
so let’s price it something the market deems fair
so that free spots are no-t as rare

We are not daily beggars
who pay not at the store
but we believe that we should find
free parking at our door

So insist that we do not build
stacks of homes for friends to fill
but Seattle is something we want to share
with neighbors who are not yet here

Living close together is
what makes Seattle great
people who do not look like us
oft’then become our mates

But we need to move around
on expensive, limited ground
so with space we must be a bit more spare
we can’t all keep driving everywhere

God bless the councilmembers and
constituents they serve
See your city’s rapid growth
embrace it with some verve

Future times will look at you
and give thanks for all you do
for Seattle and our one green Ea—rth
for Seattle and our one green Earth.

  1. Wintery gloom

    Ha!

A few years ago, they decided to have the American Association of Private Railcar Owners annual January convention in Duluth.

They know how to have proper winter gloom there.

It seems to keep the housing affordable though.
