Northgate is ready to start digging, wooooo

Northgate Link Extension groundbreaking and community celebration
August 17, 2012
3:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Groundbreaking ceremony-3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Community kick-off celebration-4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Location: Former QFC site at N.E. 66th Street & Roosevelt Way N.E.

When that TBM finally breaks through I’ll breathe a sigh of relief. The festival sounds like a good time for the kids — if Roosevelt Station were already open, I’d probably head up there with mine.

    1. Very soon. Demolition work is already underway in Roosevelt, starts later this fall in the U District.

    2. According to documents on the ST website (most recent I could find are dated May 2011) show tunneling from Roosevelt to U District to begin in early 2013 and go through mid-2017, and tunneling from the Portal to Roosevelt would be early 2014-Second half of 2018. A separate document shows U District to University of Washington Station (Husky Stadium) tunneling would be from early 2014 through early 2017.

      1. Ugh. I was going to go to the Progress Report, but saw that ST had seperate PDFs for each of them and linked there instead. I hate when outdated info is still on the documents section and not archived and replaced with more up-to-date info.
Though the referenced Progress Report shows three different sets of dates:
The Project Schedule on report page 28 (pdf page 24) shows N125 Combined Tunnels (UW- N Portal) going from Jan 8, 2013 – Mar 8, 2018
The Construction Schedule Highlights on report page 32 (pdf page 28) says TBM Tunnels Notice to Proceed given in Aug 2013 with Substantial Completion in Mar 2018
And finaly, the Critical Path (same page) shows only the Roosevelt – University tunneling from Sep 19, 2014 – Jul 13, 2015

      2. Oops, I was just looking at the critical path chart, so it was just a subset of the full contract.

      3. yeah, my impression is that the groundbreaking on Friday is ceremonial, and that the digging contracts for north link go out to bid in early 2013. It will be quite a while before any dirt is actually moved.

  1. I plan on being there. I was at the Mercer Street celebration last night at the SLU Discovery Center and was able to thank Senator Murray for all she does for our state. Did you know that she made sure that TIGER grants made it into the stimulus?

Anywa, good job on Mercer opening in two weeks and let’s move forward with the west side and finish off the remaining parts of the east end of it.
