Daimajin, your comment sounds a little sarcastic. Will it not also please you that the rails are being preserved for future transit use? I don’t know much about the situation and I do really love trails, but future transit options seem like a good thing to me.

Once the rails are out, and a trail is planned without them there, there will never be an opportunity to use the corridor for rail again.
Preserving what’s there, even if they have to be ripped out later, keeps that option open.
Trains can only go 20 mph on those tracks.
It’s easier to replace existing tracks (cheaper?), rather than install from scratch.
One of Maggie Thatcher’s legacies in the UK are all the secondary rail lines that were pulled up during her time…”to save money”. Thankfully some are slowly being restored.
